Emidio Pepe Wines is an Italian producer in Torano Nuovo of northern Abruzzo. Founded in 1964 by Emidio Pepe himself, the winery and estate remains within the family to this day. Estate vineyards are nestled between the Adriatic coast and the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains, where the conditions for growing grapes are ideal. The 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of vineyards enjoy all-day sunshine, cooling sea breezes, a significant diurnal temperature shift, and well-draining clay soils. The entire collection of Emidio Pepe wines are bottle-aged rather than barrel-aged with the cellar housing more than 350,000 bottles. Each vintage, wine is decanted into a new bottle to ensure any unwanted sediment is removed.
The vines from which the grapes destined for harvest come from, rest on clayey and medium-textured soil, and are cultivated following the precepts of organic and biodynamic agriculture. The work in the cellar is as artisanal as possible, the grapes are pressed with feet in a wooden tank, while the fermentation takes place spontaneously in a vitrified concrete tank.
An intense straw yellow color. The scent on the nose which, depending on the bottle, may require a few more minutes of oxygenation to ensure that its aromatic range is fully relaxed. Then begins bunches of white flowers, citrus peel, mineral puffs and almond paste. An evocative and unusual profile, which conquers for its expressive modality so direct and without filters. The taste has a reactive and snappy sip, despite the wine having an extractive matter and weight, but always enlivened by a backbone made of acidity and salt.
