Glenrothes was built in order to produce a cleaner, fresher spirit for blending. Together with four investors and a loan from the Church of Scotland, the distillery was established in 1879. Using a mixture of wooden and steel washbacks, Glenrothes is known for its complex malts, often requiring time in glass to fully open. Expanded upon twice, the distillery now boasts an impressive ten stills, producing over five million litres per annum.
The Glenrothes is one of the few distilleries in the world that still uses a private water source for every aspect of production. Fresh spring water from the grounds of The Glenrothes Estate is naturally filtered through millions of years of volcanic bedrock as it makes its way to the distillery, resulting in water that is remarkably soft and free from impurities. This water is fundamental to the elemental elegance that is the signature of The Glenrothes house style.
Orange oil and blackberry jam on the nose, with drying oak in the background. palate is juicy with sherry, crunchy brown sugar, a touch of boozy red wine and macadamia nuts. Sweet finish with chocolate and dried fruit.
